Summer Music Series: Love From Spain

Welcome to day twenty-five of the Summer Music Series! So, today we a special guest post from the lovely Shelika Báez. I met Shelika a few years ago at a Yelp Orlando party where we quickly found that we both shared a lot of the same music tastes. Shortly after, Shelika moved to Spain (do I need to share my jealous face? Didn’t think so…), where she still currently lives and I’m excited to have her guest blogging today. Not only is she sharing some music goodness, but it’s music goodness all the way from Spain! Anddddddddd, it’s more than one artist. (Lucky you!)

So, turn up your speakers and enjoy.

xoxo,
Elizabeth

After two years of living in Spain, I have grown to love the sounds and melodies that this Mediterranean gem boasts. Contrary to popular beliefs, Flamenco isn’t the ONLY genre of music that Spainards enjoy. In fact, there is an excellent Indie scene that rivals those in Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Los Angeles. Although I’d love to mention them all, Here are some artists I’m sure will make you feel the sultry vibe that is the Spanish summertime.

Russian Red:
My favorite Indie singer/songwriter from Spain actually got her start in my very own neighborhood, the artsy Malasana district of Madrid, Spain. Born as Lourdes Hernandez but best known as Russian Red, this vintage beauty sounds like Zooey Deschanel’s sweet Spanish cousin. Although she is a native of Madrid, she decided early on to sing primarily in English and exude a 1960s vibe that makes you want to rummage through a vintage flea market or read a classic book in a park somewhere.

Fuerteaventura

Hola a todo el Mundo (HATEM)// Hello to all of the world
Another favorite of mine is the Indie band, Hola A Todo El mundo which translates to “Hello to everyone”. Although their band name is in English and they do sing most songs in English, they also have Spanish tracks. The band has a sound very similar to Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic zeros and you’ll notice their look is the same as well.My favorite summer roadtrip soundtrack is:

A movement between these two

Looking for more traditional Spanish Flamenco sounds?

Listen to the Flamenco Chill band, Chambao and their song: Lo Mejor pa’ ti ( The best for you)

or Flamenco Fusion band Los Delinquentes ( The Delinquents) and their track :
Nube de Pegatina (Cloud made of Stickers)

Still can’t get enough of the sounds of Spain? Listen to my Spotify playlist:
